I have been shopping at the Burnhamthorpe store couple of times per month for years and experienced no problem at all, the cashiers are quiet. I like the astronomical variety of food and cheap prices. I don't know what all the fuss is about. May be the posters are involved in business rivalry to defame Yuen Ming, if it is true, it is quite unethical and immoral. I highly recommend this store to shoppers looking for variety and bargain prices. Thankyou Yuen Ming for helping low income families to survive, you do well for humanity. Wish you continuous prosperity. Timmy

To be competitive and prosperous in the market place, grocery stores have to cut cost, eliminate waste and lavish spending and curb financial abuse and pass the saving in operating cost to the consumers and to offer consumers fresh products at basement prices as consumers are no stupid shoppers.

Shopping at any grocery store where I will be greeted with smiling faces and the rhetoric of "thank you, have a good day!" while paying prices twice or three times that of Yuan Ming is not my cup of tea. It may be so for some millionaire shoppers who want to be treated like a Prime Minister or a Queen. I just shop for what I need at bargain prices, pay for them and get out of there in no time.

I am a Canadian born chinese and as far I am concerned every business must provide services in English. There are some business owners who came from HK or Vietnam and they think that they're still doing business in HK or Vietnam and they would talk to me in Cantonese or Mandarin in Canada and they would refuse to serve you in English. As a chinese Canadian I understand Cantonese and Mandarin and I know that chinese languages are spoken by the majority in the world and I am proud to be part of the chinese heritage, but we should respect the culture of others and speak the official languages of the country. Even if you go to Quebec, they would ask you to speak French beacuse it is the official language of Canada.

YuanM is competing on a high volume/low profits turnover basis. If you want all the frills, fancies and smiles that goes with large established supermarkets like Loblaws, then take your business elsewhere. I do agree that YuanM can use some air fresheners to offset the smell that comes from their open air visible fish/seafood market that is not hidden away somewhere in the back (I prefer to see how and in what condition the fish is being served). YuanM can improve on the presentation and freshen up the products (sometimes the stale vegetables are lumped together with fresh arrivals), which will make the store look more wholesome. Most of the cashiers and staff are not paid a wage commensurate with the stressful condition under which they have to produce (requiring no mistakes), faster lane reduction and little or no breaks - so the only time that they can smile is when they take home their hard-earned pay to their family

TJ - Double Check Your Receipt for OVERCHARGES !
commented on Jun 20 2011 8:38AM
The store smells BIG time .There is a smell of fish all across the store not just the fish section .

I don't think they follow safety & hygeine standards at all ..its just a matter of time before you will get food poisoning , ecoli etc from this place .. if you buy fruits/veggies/produce from this place they will go bad in a couple of day guaranteed .

They also cheat you on the weight a lot of times ..so if the sign says 49 c/lb ..expect to pay 79 c/lb at cash .

If you point out the wrong price the rude & arrogant cashiers start yelling at you ..instead of aplogizing for charging you more ..they are actually angry that you caught the wrong price . It almost looks like its a delibrate ploy/trick to charge you more at cash by cheating you on the weight/price ..I don't think its an honest mistake .

The cashier is always grumpy & is always punching the keys so fast that she makes so many mistakes while doing it ..just slow down a bit so that you will atleast enter the right prices & codes so that the customer is charged the right price ( not overcharged bcoz the cashier is trying to be superfast )

This place is also not as cheap as people think it is ..some of their products are cheap but most products can be found for similar prices at more cleaner & friendlier grocery stores .

I don't really blame the cashier's & staff for their poor attitude as most of them are overworked & underpaid by the management/owner's . I don't think they are even paid minimum wage , overtime pay , vaction pay , holiday pay etc ...no wonder they are so grumpy & pissed off all the time :(

No one is saying you can't complain Jane/lucia/kiki (you're obviously the same person). It's a [somewhat] free country. As far as rude behaviour, I believe these cashiers don't intentionally want to be rude. It really is hard to be happy and smiling in such a busy environment.

Please do complain on the website or to the head office if you must, but do not base the entire grocery store and the rest of its staff because of one employer. That's wrong. I've had plenty of good experiences there. Maybe you were the one giving the stink eye?

Feel being harassed, want to raise your concern or file your complaint? You can contact Yuan Ming at their website ...

Let the Yuan Ming big bosses know how your shopping experience sucks, if they received enough complaints, they might look into the problems.

M. Au - Attitude problem - Hurontario location
commented on Apr 3 2011 6:00PM
There is a Vietnamese Chinese lady at Hurontario location who's always rude to customer, I've seen her many times arguing with shoppers, she probably is the owner or head, because no employer will hire a cashier with that type of attitude.
I don't expect a big smiling face or fluent English speaking cashier, but I also don't expect the cashier yelling loud at me when I politely asked for the weight of an avocado. I wouldn't have bothered her if they provide a weight for the customer to check. Another customer asked why she's so mad, she replied she was tired, that's not an excuse to yell at your customer. I didn't jump in the line for a weight check, and it only wasted her 5 seconds to check the weight, did I asked for too much?
No matter how cheap her product sells, and no matter how low income her customer are, they don't come here to beg for food.I'm a Chinese too, and I feel shame that some Chinese are behaving so rude in this country. I hope this lady would eventually learn her lesson and be more polite to the customers.

commented on Mar 3 2011 1:50PM
Be aware that the cashiers working at Yuan Ming are paid at or under minimum wage and work for long hours. So financially they are not any better then some low income shoppers. So next time when you shop there, don't expect them to smile and speak fluent English. All You really want is cheap food, pay for it and get out of there, you are not there to socialize and to initiate a long diplomatic conversation. Be understanding that the cashiers live a hard life just as you do. Their disadvantage of low wages benefits you through cheap food prices. If you want high courtesy service with smiling faces, try shopping at Loblaw, Metro and other big supermarkets where the cashiers earn high wages and live a good life. But you have to paid for their good service through outrageous prices which can be 50% to 100% higher than some bargain stores.

timmy - Emerging new world order .....
commented on Mar 3 2011 12:10PM
30 years ago, only Chinese immigrants shopped in Chinese grocery stores, other ethnics were hardly seen. With rising cost of living including food prices and with more families falling towards poverty status, more and more non-Chinese low income Canadians are attracted to Chinese grocery stores. While owners of Chinese grocery stores are bewildered by the increasing number of non-Chinese shoppers with communication problem, non-Chinese shoppers are equally bewildered by the cultural differences. With China emerging as a new world economic power, the world is starting to understand the Chinese history and Chinese culture more. Owners of Chinese grocery stores are being influenced by the virtue of politeness and cleanliness in the Canadian culture and are in the process of shaping their business operation towards a harmonious relationship with their non-Chinese customers. Rome is not built in one day, but I believe, given time, a new culture and a cordial relationship will be developed.

I am proud to be a Chinese Canadian living in one of the best countries in the world. So those who complain should be more understanding and should compare the cost of living and shopping conditions in the rest of the chaotic third world and feel grateful that a store named Yuan Ming exists to lower the food cost for their families. I find that the every day prices are already cheap enough, there is no need for weekly flyer.

Things everyone should think about:

- you don't need to speak fluent English to live in Canada

- if you haven't been to China and judging people based on their ethnicity, you should stop

- if you don't like the smell of rotten fish, don't shop there

- if the sanitation situation is so terrible there, then it would be shut down by now

- if expiration dates and the like are a problem, you should report it

- no staff has any authority to invade anyone's privacy -- DON'T LET THEM

- the majority these posts on this thread have at least one grammatical error

- I say "YOU" because people love to complain, but speak up -- THAT IS THE PROBLEM

timmy - solution to fit ALL
commented on Feb 20 2011 11:50AM
I think the following solutions will solve everybody's problem:

-Turn Yuan Ming into a food bank store that all low income families struggling to make ends meet can have not only cheapest groceries in town but free food that they don't need to perpetrate shop lifting, for that will cost food price to rise to compensate for the loss.

-Being Chinese from an emerging world Economic Power, Yuan Ming should take pride and train the staffs to be well-mannered and fluent in English which is the official language of Canada.

I do appreciate Yuan Ming's cheap prices and large varieties of food and merchandise and hope low income families in poverty should feel in the same way despite of the staffs' manner. If they like cashiers with high courtesy they should shop in Metro and other big supermarkets where the cashiers are well paid through outrageous expensive prices on the expense of the consumers.

I shop there to pick up necessaries because of a low income.I don't blame the staff for not being fluent in our language. However those that deal directly with the public should at least do thier duty with the same respect shown to our Asian citizens. The real problem lies with one cashier in particular, and I don't think I need give any "hints".
I will continue to take advantage of the very fair prices and breath the same air as everyone else simply because they fit in my budget.Diana...you should have demanded you're rights to have the Police called in before you allowed anyone to examine you're bag, with NO evidence to back up the store's claims...the store is liable for a lawsuit.

Decent Canadian - Yuan Ming Sore aka dirty joint
commented on Jan 14 2011 12:32PM

Yuan Ming store at Hurontario St. really sucks. It always smells of rotten flesh, and it pervades throughout that mall. The word ‘polite’ is as alien to them. So is the English language. They behave bad. They have poor manners. They don’t care. That is mini China. Go there only if that is the last store left on the planet. I wonder how such an unhealthy place is allowed to exist in Canada.

What I said hurt you? I just said watch your attitude. No matter whether in China, in Canada or in other countries, there're always some bad ones. Don't say Chinese are somewhat. Have you ever been to China? Why did you say it's not in China, what does it mean? Would you please explain it?

Weihong , your statement consider bullying, when people complaint about harassment, don't give a negative comment, if you can't give a good advice, this is not China, this is Canada, don't be rude, have some manner.

If you don't like it, do go there. Even we are in China, we are nice to people. Just some people steal some staff, the store lose money, but we Chinese still sell the cheap price. Think of your own attitude before you said some bad things to dirty Chinese, OK?

Diana - Harrasment at Yuan Ming Supermarket, Hurontario
commented on Aug 14 2010 1:38PM
Think twice before you go to Yuan Ming Supermarket at Hurontario.
A couple days ago I went for groceries to Yuan Ming Supermarket in Hurontario.
One of the cashier, search/ open my shopping bag and my purse in front of other customers.
They make a wrong accusation, and they didn't apologize to me.
I asked to see the manager, the manager said, they suspect someone else, but she didn't apologize to me.
It's also hard to communicate with them , because most of them can't speak English and they are really rude.
I have been wondering why the goverment allowed that kind of supermarket to operate, the staff are rude, can't speak English, they make their own law, like they still live in their previous country.
The sanitation of the store also questionable, I am really hurt of their action to me, they didn't even apologize.

I have to travel a fair distance (45mins)to shop at Yuan Ming's,so I use the online flyers to check out the current sale items and their prices to plan my shopping list. Pictures of the store and groceries without prices are not useful and just waste my time.
